In 2010-11, the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School (YWLCS) partnered with the Civic Leadership Foundation (CLF) to implement a first-time in-school leadership program at YWLCS for 7th, 9th, and 12th grade students that would help build character, confidence and civic participation. The leadership program integrates leadership theory and social entrepreneurship practice to teach the values, skills and knowledge needed to develop students into ethical leaders and active participants in the community.
Through a generous grant from CLF for the second year, YWLCS is able to offer required leadership classes for all grade levels several times a week during the 2011-12 school year. YWLCS has hired an additional leadership teacher to help teach the additional courses, and to infuse leadership throughout all classrooms in the building.
The Leadership Program at YWLCS aims to empower students to explore their core values, envision their future, and realize their potential as they identify and address social needs of their community and school. By planning for growth and sustainability, YWLCS’ partnership with CLF will empower students who pass through the doors of YWLCS for years to come.
