Internships

"My internship helped me become a better person.  I was able to experience the career of being a scientist.  I think it is important to have an internship in the career you are interested in because it shows you what it involves and helps you to make better decisions."

Shaniqua W., Class of 2010

Excerpt from Reflection on her Internship at

University of Chicago, Materials Research Center

Workplace conditions are continually changing to meet the demands of today’s global economy, but the basic skills for success remain the same. This is why the learning experience of YWLCS student extends beyond the walls of the school.

Our internship program serves as a bridge between the academic world and the world of work. It helps students integrate the general skills and knowledge acquired through their liberal arts education at YWLCS with the specific requirements of an occupation or community based organization. Every Wednesday, beginning the second trimester of the school year, all 10th grade students travel to work as interns in Chicago area businesses and community based organizations.

The classroom learning focuses on developing the skills and competencies that businesses are requesting schools teach students, such as teamwork, problem-solving, public speaking, and written and oral communication. These are specific work habits, attitudes, and performance objectives that will prepare young people for the high-skilled, high-performance jobs of the future. Students receive leadership training on business behavior, prioritizing, working with diverse people in diverse settings. They practice their interview skills with community volunteers. They also receive an orientation to Chicago's public transportation system.  By mastering these skills YWLCS students will be in a position to compete for high-paying, skilled professions.

With the completion of their internships, students have a performance evaluation.  Students prepare and present a 15-minute PowerPoint program to a panel of teachers, community volunteers and their internship supervisor.

In 2002. the YWLCS internship and mentoring program received a coveted BP Leader Award in recognition of its innovative and effective approach to addressing the need to expand educational and career opportunities for urban girls.
