Special ProjectsChicago River Project Real Women Do Real Science The River Project is a real-life science experience for the young women of YWLCS to annually investigate the life science, physical, environmental, chemical, and biological aspects of the Chicago River. The purpose is to increase their awareness and understanding of how all science disciplines are connected and impact each other. This opportunity allows them to practice using their science processing skills to conduct real-life scientific investigations. The project begins with grade level River Trips to the Chicago River. Each grade level spends an entire day at the Chicago River conducting experiments and collecting data. After the River Trips students return to the classrooms to compile and analyze their data to draw conclusions about the Chicago River. Students then create scientific poster boards to display at the YWLCS Science Fair.During the YWLCS Science Fair students demonstrate what they learned by presenting their scientific poster boards to volunteer judges and YWLCS staff. At the end students are awarded trophies, ribbons, and certificates for their efforts of being real young women scientists.

Model World Conference on
Two of 5 "top speakers" for the day came from Y-Dub: Yasmine Y. (Sudan — Violence) and Cristine G. (Afghanistan — Political Rights) Two of 5 top resolutions (passed through the committee and plenary sessions) were born from Y-Dub students (and merged with another delegation for a co-sponsored bill): Nicole M. (Sudan — Economics) and Keshia L. (Sudan — Political Rights). In addition, several of the organizers approached Elizabeth to compliment the YWLCS students for their preparation, presentation, and critical thinking/good questions in committee. They did all of the prep for this outside of school hours and are to be commended for their hard work. All YWLCS supporters would have been proud to hear our girls defend a resolution, proposed by another delegation, on single-sex education. When another student questioned whether girls in single-sex schools would know how to carry themselves in the "real world" after school, our delegates gave them an earful about how such an education makes girls both competent and confident — case and point in their conduct today! Center for Reproductive Science
Sixteen YWLCS students participated in an intensive, 24-hour experience at the Center for Reproductive Science at Northwestern University. The special science workshop took place on three consecutive Saturdays in February 2007. A graduation ceremony was held in recognition of the students' commitment to undertaking this fabulous learning experience.
