START:
Students & Teachers All Reading Together

START is YWLCS's reading initiative. Every morning, between 8:30 and 9:00 A.M., all students and teachers meet in small groups to read, discuss, and write about books.

On any given day you can observe students acting out a scene from Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl reading Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men popcorn style (students call on each other to read), or discussing the dreams and ambitions of Lorraine Hansberry’s characters in A Raisin in the Sun. While many groups stick to reading novels and plays, our more advanced readers are engaged in sociological texts, like Fast Food Nation, that challenge their understanding of our culture.

Our goals for the START program include promoting a love of literature, creating a school climate of reading as a valued activity, as well as introducing and reinforcing reading strategies including summarizing, predicting, clarifying, questioning and visualizing.

Here's how students feel about START:

"I would say that [START] is a pretty good program. I have learned new words along the way and I can see that more of my classmates have been reading a lot more. Last year, people who read all the time were called ‘bookies’ or ‘bookworms.’ Now, I can see people carrying a few extra books."

"Even though the school focuses on science, technology, and math, the START program keeps us reading. It also inspires me to read outside of class and school. I am reading a book called To Kill a Mockingbird now. I think we should continue with this program.
