As evident in our name, the Young Women's Leadership Charter School (YWLCS) places high emphasis on the development of leader. Our young women from grades 7-12 are expected to graduate from YWLCS with the tools necessary to act as moral, ethical leaders in their local, national and global communities.
In 2010-11, the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School (YWLCS) partnered with the Civic Leadership Foundation (CLF) to implement a first-time in-school leadership program at YWLCS for 7th, 9th, and 12th grade students that would help build character, confidence and civic participation. The leadership program integrates leadership theory and social entrepreneurship practice to teach the values, skills and knowledge needed to develop students into ethical leaders and active participants in the community.
Through a generous grant from CLF awarded for the second year, YWLCS is able to offer required leadership classes for all grade levels several times a week during the 2011-12 school year. YWLCS has hired an additional leadership teacher to help teach the additional courses, and to infuse leadership throughout all classrooms.
The Leadership Program at YWLCS aims to empower students to explore their core values, envision their future, and realize their potential as they identify and address social needs of their community and school. By planning for growth and sustainability, YWLCS’ partnership with CLF will empower students who pass through the doors of YWLCS for years to come.
YWLCS is grounded on four pillars: academic achievement, college and career preparation, personal and social development, and leadership. In order for our students to realize their true leadership potential, YWLCS teachers and staff regularly integrate opportunities for leadership in the classroom and school day. By conducting Visitor Days, leading new student Open Houses, and learning through hands-on community projects, our students grow aware of their capacity for leadership.
In addition to faculty led and partner guided leadership programming, YWLCS also invests in student led leadership activities. YWLCS offers students the opportunity to participate in a middle school Student Voice Committee and high school Student Government that frequently work together to make sure their school community reflects the needs of its students.
