Leadership Development

The YWLCS is specifically designed to produce strong leaders, and that is the reason that the word "Leadership" appears in our school name. As our students mature from girls into young women, we expect each of them to become a leader in their home, their community and their country.

Leadership development begins in the school community and is integral to life at YWLCS. For example,it is YWLCS students who explain our curriculum and evaluation system to potential new students and their families at Open House nights and lead tours for visitors to the school. We also have a Student Council.

But leadership development extends to broader areas as well.

Community Service

Community Service Clean Up PhotoYWLCS students have participated in a number of community service activities. Our students have volunteered in nursing homes and senior communities, with programs for young children under the auspices of Bethel New Life, in clean-up days on the Chicago River with Friends of the Chicago River, and in other community organizations as part of their freshman internship programs.

Community Service Clothing Drive PhotoPart of the YWLCS philosphy is that community service is essential in becoming a responsible participant in the social fabric of our neighborhoods, city and nation. On the right, students run a clothing drive. The clothing will be sent to Liberia.

Summer Enrichment

Every summer, the YWLCS offers opportunities for academic enrichment, leadership development and personal and social growth to its students.

In 2004, six YWLCS students had paid internships at KACS — Girls Get Digital Web Design; 8 students participated in the YTC Hydroclarity Documentary Project in which teens are taught documentary film technique including interviewing, camera usage, and editing.

Other summer experiences included a paid apprenticeship at Gallery 37, where students study with professional artists in the fields of the visual, peforming or media arts; and participation in the Marwen art education program.

Project Exploration

This year, YWLCS students and a YWLCS Faculty member again participated in Project Exploration's third All Girl Summer Expedition to Puerto Rico.

From the website of Project Exploration:

The team spent two weeks in Chicago preparing for the field. The girls learned about Puerto Rican history and culture through the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and rainforest botany with the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance. Finally, they honed their data collection skills with Friends of the Chicago River.

When in Puerto Rico, the girls did so much more than just develop their science skills. They faced the everyday challenges of living in the rainforest. Lizards were a common guest in their platform tents, insects and frogs sang all night long, and everything was muddy all the time.

For city legs used to Chicago topography, the hilly slippery slopes of the rainforest required some getting used to. Mudfights, high spirits, and the amazing scenery helped the girls make it through. Now back in the Chicago, the team will be working on developing a final presentation to share their experiences with other young people and their communities.
