| Must Invest in Our Young People’s Education YWLCS believes that expenditures on public education for our nation’s young people are investments in our future. YWLCS spends about $12,000 per student per year to provide a life-altering education. This amount includes all of the administrative costs, as well as the direct instructional costs. This amount compares favorably to average amounts spent in successful urban public schools. But it is $4,200 per student per year less than we receive in public funding. Rather than sacrifice things considered necessary to successful public education such as small classes, qualified faculty, college and career counseling, and access to on-site social workers and health care, YWLCS committed itself to closing that gap through private contributions. Each year it is a struggle, but each year we have located individuals, corporations and foundations willing to join with us in our commitment to educating our young people and transforming bleak futures into productive and fulfilling futures. YWLCS is also committed to the equitable and sufficient investment in all young people served by the public school system. Therefore, YWLCS, working through various alliances, including the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, actively advocates with our local, state, and national officials for appropriate and adequate funding of all public schools.
